In an effort to provide migrant students with additional academic support, the Martin County School District Migrant Program utilizes academic checklists for the migrant teachers to implement that focus on student performance reviews and academic action plans that involve parents. These action plans highlight the important place that parent involvement holds in the Migrant Program.  This academic support initiative is primarily directed to priority of need students, students who have had an interruption in their education within the last 12 months.  However, the migrant staff implement the plans with additional students based on need and availability of time.
Initiated during the 2008-09 school year, the migrant program provides after school tutoring for grades 9 – 12 students and to middle school students, if tutoring slots are available.  The focus of the tutoring is two-fold.  Students may obtain academic support with FCAT preparation and/or with course credit accrual through the PASS Program.
The Title I program has two fully implemented Parent Resource Centers (PRC), Stuart and Indiantown. Therefore, all migrant families and students have access to a Parent Resource Center.  Further, the Indiantown PRC offers a parent education program designed to teach parents English while learning how to assist their children at home with academics.
In addition, the Migrant Summer Program has an instructional focus directly addressing vocabulary, comprehension and fluency development with grades K-12 students.  Bilingual migrant staff provide an in-home, hands-on, motivating instructional program.  Further, Migrant staff work with parents of pre-school migrant children to provide them with strategies to help prepare their children for Kindergarten.

Text Box: Support Services
While not directly related to academic progress, the outreach program assists students and families with health concerns, social challenges, and even emotional difficulties.  These services are significant to the stability of the families in need and to the academic achievement of their children.  Students of all ages learn most effectively when their basic needs have been addressed.    During times of crisis, the Migrant staff assists families to connect with community agencies that can provide assistance, with medical, social or monetary needs.  Clothing, food and household goods are collected and distributed to families when needed.  Translation and transportation services are offered to and from medical and social services agencies when no other option is available.  Other translation services enabling families to qualify for services or employment are available through our bilingual staff.  Any and all efforts to establish and maintain a level of trust and support for our migrant families assists in the achievement and success of their children.
